Nano Banana 2.1 vs Nano Banana 2: Same Prompt, Both Models

Nano Banana 2.1 launched on October 6, 2026 at about half the price of Nano Banana 2. We ran one text-heavy prompt on both and compared the results and credit cost.

Nano Banana 2.1 is Google's image model released on October 6, 2026, as the successor to Nano Banana 2. Google lists better text rendering, prompt adherence, multi-turn subject consistency, and wide-format framing, and cuts the price per image to about half. On GPT-IMG a 1K image costs 15 credits on 2.1 and 25 on Nano Banana 2. This post runs the same prompt on both, shows what came back, and says plainly what one test can and cannot tell you.

Created: October 7, 2026. Updated: October 7, 2026.

The test

One prompt, both models, 1K, 16:9, no reference image. The prompt asks for in-image text, which is the area Google says improved:

A hand-lettered chalkboard cafe menu board leaning against a brick wall, heading "TODAY'S BREW" and three lines: "Flat White 4.50", "Oat Latte 5.00", "Cold Brew 4.80", soft morning window light, 35mm photo

Nano Banana 2.1 (15 credits, 12 seconds in our run):

Nano Banana 2.1 output: a chalkboard menu leaning against a brick wall, with the heading and three priced lines spelled exactly as written

Nano Banana 2 (25 credits):

Nano Banana 2 output: a framed chalkboard menu in a busy cafe with customers, a currency symbol added before the first price, and small icons next to each item

What we saw

Both models spelled every word and number correctly. That is a real result, since in-image text is where older image models usually broke. On this prompt, text accuracy did not separate them.

The difference was in how literally each followed the brief:

  • 2.1 stayed with what was asked. A board against a brick wall, the heading, three lines, prices written as given. No extra symbols, no extra scene.
  • Nano Banana 2 added things. A pound sign in front of the first price, small drawings beside each drink, and a full cafe with people in the background. The picture is attractive, but none of it was in the prompt.

Whether that is a point for 2.1 depends on the job. For a menu, a poster, or anything where the text must match a source exactly, a model that does not invent a currency symbol is the safer one. For a mood image where you want the model to fill in a scene, the extra detail in Nano Banana 2 may be what you wanted.

What this test does not show

This is one prompt and one image from each model. It is enough to show that both handle short text, and that they differ in how much they add. It does not show that 2.1 is better across the board, and we did not test multi-turn subject consistency or wide panoramic framing, which are the other two areas Google highlights. Run your own prompt on the Nano Banana 2.1 page before moving a workflow over.

Cost and timing on GPT-IMG

ResolutionNano Banana 2.1Nano Banana 2
1K15 credits25 credits
2K20 credits35 credits
4K30 credits50 credits

Reference-image edits cost the same as text-to-image at the same resolution, with up to 5 reference images. The 2.1 run above finished in 12 seconds, and a reference edit in about 15 seconds. These are single measurements, not averages.

Which should you use?

Use 2.1 as the default. It costs less at every resolution and, in this test, followed the prompt more closely. Nano Banana 2 is on its way out: Google has said the older model will be shut down on October 29, 2026, so prompts you rely on should be checked on 2.1 now rather than after the cutoff. Keep Nano Banana Pro for finished work where detail at 2K or 4K matters more than price.

FAQ

What is Nano Banana 2.1?

Google's image generation and editing model released on October 6, 2026. It replaces Nano Banana 2 and costs about half as much per image.

How much does Nano Banana 2.1 cost on GPT-IMG?

15 credits at 1K, 20 at 2K, and 30 at 4K. New accounts get free credits to try it.

Is Nano Banana 2.1 better than Nano Banana 2?

Google says so on text rendering, prompt adherence, and subject consistency. In our one text-heavy test both rendered the text correctly, and 2.1 added fewer things that were not in the prompt.

Can Nano Banana 2.1 edit a photo?

Yes. Add up to 5 reference images and describe the change. The model redraws the frame, so expect small differences outside the area you asked to change.

Nano Banana 2.1 is cheaper than the model it replaces and, on a text-heavy prompt, stayed closer to the brief. Try your own prompt on the Nano Banana 2.1 page, and compare it against Nano Banana Pro if the result has to be print-ready.
