Nano Banana Pro Review: What the Extra Credits Buy
Nano Banana Pro costs 45 credits a shot on GPT-IMG. What that buys: 4K detail, reference edits at no surcharge, and a 1K tier you should never use.
Nano Banana Pro is Google's highest-detail image model, and on GPT-IMG it costs 45 credits at 1K, 45 at 2K, and 90 at 4K. This review covers what that price actually buys, why the 1K tier is a trap, and when the cheaper Nano Banana 2 is the better call.

What Nano Banana Pro actually is
Nano Banana Pro is the top tier of Google's image generation line, sitting above Nano Banana 2 in both output detail and price. On GPT-IMG it is the model that Nano Banana prompts from the gallery open with by default, and it has its own Nano Banana Pro page with the generator pre-configured.
The positioning is narrower than the name suggests. This is not a general-purpose workhorse you point at every job. It is the model you move to once a prompt already works, when the finished file has to hold up at full size: product photography, portraits, print-bound creative, anything a client will open at 100% zoom.
That distinction matters more here than with the OpenAI models, because of how the pricing is shaped.
The pricing quirk that decides how you use it
Here is the credit table on GPT-IMG:

Read that table again. 1K and 2K cost exactly the same 45 credits.
There is no reason to ever run Nano Banana Pro at 1K. You pay the same price for a quarter of the pixels. If you are drafting and want to save credits, the answer is not a lower resolution on this model. It is a different model entirely. If you have already committed to Pro, go straight to 2K.
The 4K tier is a genuine decision, because it doubles the price to 90 credits. That is one of the most expensive single images on the platform. Reserve it for work that will actually be printed or displayed large, not for a social post that will be downscaled to 1080 pixels anyway.
Reference edits do not cost extra
This is the part of the pricing most people will miss, and it is the strongest argument for the model.
It bills purely by resolution. Text-to-image and reference-image editing run on the same table, so uploading a photo and asking for a change costs the same 45 credits as generating from scratch.

The surface and the background both changed, and the parts that mattered survived: the circular brushing on the case, the bracelet links, the crown, the red seconds hand. What did not hold is the framing. The instruction asked for the same crop, and the watch still came back slightly larger and further into the centre of the frame. If a reference edit has to line up pixel for pixel with the original, plan on compositing rather than trusting the crop.
So the two models cross over depending on the job. For single text-to-image generations, GPT Image 2 at 10 credits is far cheaper than Pro at 45. For a session of five or six rounds of reference edits, the gap narrows sharply, and Pro's flat rate stops looking expensive. What the extra credits are for
A brief that suits this model reads like a photography spec rather than an idea. Something in this shape:

The material detail — brushing on the case, grain in the wood, the falloff of a raking light — is what a top-tier model is being paid to resolve. A prompt that names none of it will look roughly the same on a model costing a third as much, and you will have spent the credits for nothing.

The herringbone in the coat is legible, the skin keeps its texture instead of going plastic, and the empty space landed on the right where the prompt asked for it. That last part matters for anyone generating images that need a headline dropped on top later.
The inverse is also true. If your brief is "a cheerful illustration of a cat for a blog header," the extra detail has nothing to attach to. Run it on Nano Banana 2 and put the savings into more iterations.
Where it stumbles
Four honest limitations, all of them structural rather than a matter of taste.
There are no quality tiers. The OpenAI models on GPT-IMG expose Standard, Medium, and High, which gives you a second dial for trading detail against credits. Nano Banana Pro has only resolution. Combined with the 1K and 2K tiers costing the same, that means the model effectively has one draft price and one final price, and nothing in between.
45 credits is more than a new account has to spend. Signup gives you 30 credits, so a brand new account cannot generate a single Nano Banana Pro image without topping up. That is a real friction point, and the sensible path is to shape your prompt on a cheaper model first.
4K doubles the price, and not every job earns it. 90 credits buys one image. The same 90 credits buys two 2K images on Pro, or three 4K images on Nano Banana 2. Unless the output is going to print or a large display, the second option usually produces better work, because iteration beats resolution more often than people expect.
Free-tier output carries a watermark. Images generated on the free signup credits are watermarked. An active subscription or a balance of purchased credits removes it. Worth knowing before you plan a client deliverable around the free credits.

Seven aspect ratios cover the usual placements: 16:9 for a hero, 9:16 for a story, 1:1 for a feed post, 3:2 and 2:3 for print-shaped work. Set the ratio before you write the prompt rather than cropping afterwards, because composition and ratio are the same decision.
Up to five reference photos can go into a single generation. There is no separate role selector for them, so the prompt is what tells the model which photo is the subject and which one is only supplying style.

At 2K the gap is narrowest: 35 against 45, a 29% premium for the higher-detail model. At 4K it is 50 against 90, nearly double. So if you are going to use Pro at all, 2K is where it is easiest to justify.
