ChatGPT Image Editing Prompts That Keep Your Photo

ChatGPT image editing prompts for common photo edits, built on one rule: name the change, then name what must stay. Copy, adapt, and check the result.

The best ChatGPT image editing prompts do two jobs: they name the one change you want, and they name everything that must stay the same. Most disappointing edits come from the second half being missing, because the model is free to redraw anything you did not lock.

ChatGPT is a product of OpenAI, and GPT-IMG is not affiliated with it. These prompts are written for any image editor that takes a photo plus text, including ChatGPT and GPT-IMG. They are templates, not guaranteed results: models vary, and every output needs a check before you use it.

The formula behind good ChatGPT image editing prompts

Write each prompt as three short clauses.

  1. Change. The single edit, stated as a plain action. "Replace the background with a rainy street."
  2. Keep. The things that must not move. "Keep the person, their pose, their clothing, and their face exactly as they are."
  3. Match. How the new part should fit. "Match the light direction and the colour of the original photo."

The "keep" clause does most of the work. When you edit a photo with a model, the frame is redrawn rather than cut and pasted. A clear list of what to hold is the best control you have over what changes.

Two rules follow from this. Ask for one change per prompt, and run the next change as a second prompt from the result. And name things the way a person would look at the photo: "the woman in the blue coat on the left" works better than "the subject".

Ten ChatGPT image editing prompts you can copy

Change what someone is wearing

Change only the outfit: dress the person in a navy
wool overcoat over a cream turtleneck. Keep the
face, hair, pose, and background exactly as they
are, and keep the lighting consistent.

For a fuller walkthrough, see the AI outfit changer.

Try a new hairstyle

Change only the hairstyle to a shoulder-length
layered bob with soft curtain bangs, same hair
colour. Keep the face, skin tone, expression,
clothing, and background unchanged.

The AI hairstyle changer page has more detail on describing cuts.

Replace the background

Replace only the background with a sunlit rooftop
terrace at golden hour. Keep the subject, their
edges, pose, and clothing exactly as they are, and
match the light on them to the new scene.

Try it on the AI background changer.

Remove people from a photo

Remove the two people walking in the background
and fill in the pavement and shop front behind
them. Keep the couple in the foreground, the
framing, and the lighting exactly as they are.

The remove people from a photo page covers shadows and overlaps.

Add a person

Add the person from image 2 into image 1,
standing at the right edge of the group. Match
the scene's light and scale, add a soft shadow,
and keep everyone in image 1 exactly as they are.

This one needs two photos. See how to add a person to a photo.

Extend a photo to a wider frame

Extend this photo into a wider 16:9 frame,
continuing the scene on both sides. Keep the
original centre exactly as it is.

The AI image extender explains how to pick the new shape first.

Fix the lighting

Brighten the subject's face slightly and add soft
window light from the left. Keep the composition,
colours, expression, and everything else unchanged.

Change the words on a sign

Change only the text on the shop sign so it reads
NIGHT OWL COFFEE, keeping the same lettering style,
colour, and placement. Leave everything else in the
photo unchanged.

There is more on lettering in edit text in an image.

Recolour one object

Change only the colour of the car to deep green.
Keep the shape, reflections, wheels, background,
and lighting unchanged.

Give a photo a retro look

Give this photo a 1970s look: warm faded colours,
soft film grain, and a gentle vignette. Keep the
people, composition, and expressions unchanged.

The retro photo effect page covers other decades.

Using these in ChatGPT or in GPT-IMG

In ChatGPT, attach the photo and paste the prompt. In GPT-IMG, upload the photo on the image to image page, choose a model, and paste the same text. The difference is control: GPT-IMG shows the credit cost before you submit (25 credits for a 1K Standard edit on GPT Image 2.5, 15 on FLUX 2 Pro), lets you attach up to five reference photos, and refunds failed jobs. For the pricing details, see credit pricing.

For the general pattern behind these prompts, read edit an image without changing the rest.

How specific the keep clause should be

A weak keep clause names nothing: "don't change anything else." It sounds complete, but the model has no list to check against. A strong one names the things most likely to drift. For a portrait, that is the face, hair, skin tone, pose, and clothing. For a product photo, it is the shape, label text, colour, and proportions. For a room, it is the furniture layout and the window position.

You can also name the camera: "same angle, same crop, same lighting." Those six words cover the three things people notice first when an edited photo looks wrong. If a result still moves something, add that item by name to the next prompt instead of rewriting the whole thing.

Mistakes that ruin an edit

  • "Make it better." A model cannot tell which part you mean. Name the part.
  • Three changes in one prompt. The result trades one against the others. Split them.
  • Contradictions. "Make it darker and brighter" produces neither. Choose one.
  • No keep clause. Anything you do not lock can change.
  • Expecting pixel-exact preservation. A redrawn frame can alter fine detail, so check faces, text, and patterns at full size.

A quick check before you use the result

Compare the result with your original side by side. Look at faces first, then hands, then any text. If something moved that you did not ask to change, add it to the keep clause and run again. For photos of other people, only edit pictures where they have agreed, and read the terms before using an edited image commercially.

FAQ

What is a good prompt for editing a photo in ChatGPT?

State one change, then list what must stay the same, then say how the new part should match. For example: change the background to a beach, keep the person and clothing exactly as they are, and match the light. Use the same three clauses for any edit, and change one thing per prompt.

How do I stop ChatGPT from changing my whole image?

Add an explicit keep clause naming the face, pose, clothing, and background, and ask for one edit at a time. The frame is redrawn on every run, so a short list of locked items matters more than a long description of the change.

Can ChatGPT edit just part of an image?

You can steer it to change one area by describing that area clearly and locking the rest in the prompt. It is not a pixel mask, so fine detail near the edit can shift. Check the result against the original.

Do these prompts work in other image editors?

They are written as plain instructions, so they work in any editor that takes a photo and text. Results vary by model, so run the same prompt on two models when the edit matters and keep the cleaner result. Edits that need a second photo, such as adding a person, only work in tools that accept more than one upload.
